Dr. Mahmoud B. El-Tamer

Dr. Mahmoud B. El-Tamer, MD, is a highly experienced breast surgical oncologist with more than 30 years of expertise caring for patients with breast cancer. He specializes in oncoplastic surgery, a technique that combines cancer removal with breast reconstruction to preserve and enhance physical appearance, and cares for more than 350 breast cancer patients annually. Dr. El-Tamer brings a deeply patient-centered approach to his practice, taking time at every appointment to walk patients through their surgical options, recovery expectations, and anticipated outcomes, with the goal of ensuring each person leaves feeling confident in the care they will receive.

Dr. El-Tamer is actively engaged in clinical and surgical research aimed at improving quality of life and refining the standards of breast cancer surgery. He is currently involved in the IDEA Trial, a multi-institutional study investigating whether radiation therapy can be safely eliminated for patients with low-risk, early-stage breast cancer following lumpectomy, an approach that could meaningfully reduce treatment-related side effects. He is also exploring less-invasive surgical approaches for patients whose cancers respond well to chemotherapy. His research has been supported by the Avon Foundation for Women, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and the American College of Surgeons, where he has served as principal or co-principal investigator on multiple funded studies. He has authored or co-authored more than 120 book chapters, manuscripts, and editorials, and has published two textbooks focused on improving cosmetic outcomes in breast cancer surgery.

A committed educator and leader in the field, Dr. El-Tamer organizes and contributes to national and international surgical workshops dedicated to teaching breast surgeons how to achieve optimal cosmetic results. He serves on the editorial boards of several leading medical journals and is an active member of prominent professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
