Dr. Joseph A. Sparano, MD, is a nationally distinguished medical oncologist and a leading authority in breast cancer and HIV-associated malignancies. He serves as Chief of the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and Deputy Director of the Tisch Cancer Institute. Dr. Sparano earned his medical degree from New York Medical College and completed his residency and fellowship training in internal medicine and medical oncology at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Board-certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology, he brings decades of clinical and academic leadership to translational cancer research and multidisciplinary oncology care.
Dr. Sparano is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work in precision medicine, including his leadership of the landmark TAILORx trial. This pivotal study redefined how genomic profiling is used to guide adjuvant chemotherapy decisions in hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative early breast cancer, significantly impacting treatment guidelines worldwide. He has also contributed to the development of predictive tools such as RSClin, and has led efforts to integrate circulating tumor DNA and other biomarkers into early detection and surveillance strategies.
