Dr. Ronald P. DeMatteo, MD, is a nationally recognized surgical oncologist with expertise in treating liver, pancreatic, and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). He serves as Chair of the Department of Surgery at Penn Medicine and the John Rhea Barton Professor of Surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. DeMatteo earned his medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College, completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, and pursued fellowship training in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He is board-certified in Surgery.
Dr. DeMatteo is widely known for his work in the management of complex abdominal cancers and for leading clinical trials that have shaped treatment protocols for GIST. His research has focused on the role of targeted therapies, such as tyrosine kinase inhibitors, in conjunction with surgical resection to improve patient outcomes.
