Dr. Ronald P. DeMatteo

Dr. Ronald P. DeMatteo, MD, is a nationally recognized surgical oncologist with expertise in treating liver, pancreatic, and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). He serves as Chair of the Department of Surgery at Penn Medicine and the John Rhea Barton Professor of Surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. DeMatteo earned his medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College, completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, and pursued fellowship training in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He is board-certified in Surgery.

Dr. DeMatteo is widely known for his work in the management of complex abdominal cancers and for leading clinical trials that have shaped treatment protocols for GIST. His research has focused on the role of targeted therapies, such as tyrosine kinase inhibitors, in conjunction with surgical resection to improve patient outcomes. He has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications and is recognized for his contributions to advancing multidisciplinary care in hepatobiliary and sarcoma surgery. His work has influenced national guidelines and helped define standards for treating rare and aggressive tumors.

In addition to his clinical and research leadership, Dr. DeMatteo is a respected educator and academic leader. He has mentored numerous surgical trainees and junior faculty and plays an active role in shaping surgical education and health system integration at Penn Medicine. He is a member of leading professional societies, including the Society of Surgical Oncology and the American College of Surgeons.
