Dr. Sara A. Hurvitz
Medical Oncologist, Hematologist Oncologist · Breast CancerDr. Sara Hurvitz, MD, is a highly regarded breast medical oncologist specializing in the treatment and research of breast cancer. She currently serves as Senior Vice President of Clinical Research at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and as the inaugural Head of the Division of Breast Medical Oncology. Prior to joining Fred Hutch, Dr. Hurvitz held multiple leadership roles at UCLA, including Director of the Breast Cancer Clinical Trials Program and the Breast Cancer Research Program at the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. She earned her medical degree from the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, completed her residency in internal medicine at UCLA, and pursued fellowship training in hematology and oncology at UCLA. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Medical Oncology.
Dr. Hurvitz is widely known for her expertise in HER2-positive and hormone receptor–positive breast cancers, having led numerous clinical trials that have helped shape modern treatment standards. Her research focuses on novel therapeutics, biomarker development, and mechanisms of resistance in breast cancer therapy. She has served as principal investigator for pivotal studies leading to the approval of several targeted therapies and antibody-drug conjugates. With over 150 peer-reviewed publications to her name, she is a frequent presenter at national and international oncology conferences and serves on key advisory panels and editorial boards in the field.
In addition to her research and clinical leadership, Dr. Hurvitz is a dedicated educator and mentor to medical trainees and early-career investigators. She plays an active role in shaping national breast cancer research priorities through her work with academic societies and cooperative groups. Through her commitment to innovation, mentorship, and translational science, Dr. Hurvitz continues to drive advancements in breast cancer care and remains a leading voice in the global oncology community.
