Dr. Sofia D. Merajver, MD, PhD, is an internationally recognized physician–scientist specializing in breast cancer, molecular genetics, and cancer health disparities. She serves as Professor of Internal Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of Michigan and Director of the Breast and Ovarian Cancer Risk Evaluation Program at the Rogel Cancer Center. Dr. Merajver earned her medical degree and PhD in physics from the University of Michigan. She completed her residency in internal medicine at the University of Michigan and fellowship training in hematology/oncology at the same institution. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology.
A leader in translational research, Dr. Merajver has made major contributions to understanding hereditary cancer syndromes, molecular mechanisms of metastasis, and cancer health equity. She has conducted groundbreaking research on BRCA1/2 mutations and cancer risk, and her laboratory has advanced the study of signaling pathways driving breast cancer progression. She has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and has received continuous NIH funding for her research. Her international collaborations extend to global health initiatives, particularly in addressing cancer disparities in low-resource settings.
In addition to her scientific leadership, Dr. Merajver is a dedicated educator and mentor, having trained generations of oncologists and physician–scientists. She has served on national and international advisory panels, including committees for the NCI and WHO. Through her commitment to patient care, translational discovery, and health equity, Dr. Sofia Merajver continues to influence the global landscape of breast cancer research and care.
