Dr. Steven Powell

Dr. Steven Powell, MD, is a respected medical oncologist specializing in thoracic and head and neck cancers, with a particular focus on immunotherapy and precision medicine approaches. He serves as Section Chief of Medical Oncology and Associate Director of Clinical Research at the Sanford Cancer Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Dr. Powell earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School, completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Minnesota, and pursued fellowship training in hematology and oncology at Mayo Clinic. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Medical Oncology and is recognized for his expertise in developing clinical trials that bring novel cancer therapies to patients in community settings.

An accomplished clinical investigator, Dr. Powell has led and participated in early-phase and cooperative group trials testing new immunotherapy and targeted agents for lung and head and neck cancers. His research has contributed to advancing access to clinical trials in rural areas and to expanding therapeutic options for patients in underserved regions. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and presented his work at national meetings, helping shape the clinical application of immunotherapy in thoracic oncology.
