Dr. Suresh S. Ramalingam, MD, is an internationally recognized medical oncologist specializing in thoracic malignancies, with a particular focus on lung cancer. He serves as Executive Director of Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University, Professor of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Emory University School of Medicine, and holds the Roberto C. Goizueta Distinguished Chair for Cancer Research. Dr. Ramalingam earned his medical degree from Kilpauk Medical College at the University of Madras in India, completed his residency in internal medicine at Wayne State University, and pursued fellowship training in hematology and medical oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Medical Oncology and is widely regarded for his leadership in translational research and clinical trials in lung cancer.
A leader in the development of targeted therapies and immunotherapies, Dr. Ramalingam has led landmark studies that helped establish EGFR inhibitors, ALK inhibitors, and immune checkpoint inhibitors as standard treatments for non–small cell lung cancer. He has authored more than 400 peer-reviewed publications and contributed extensively to national guidelines that define lung cancer care. His research has been instrumental in advancing biomarker-driven strategies and improving outcomes for patients with advanced thoracic malignancies.
In addition to his scientific leadership, Dr. Ramalingam is a dedicated educator, mentor, and institutional leader. He has served on the ASCO Board of Directors and the National Cancer Institute Thoracic Malignancy Steering Committee, and he is Editor-in-Chief of Cancer journal. He has received numerous honors, including the Heine Hansen Award from the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer.
