Dr. Wayne S. Orr, MD, is a highly regarded surgical oncologist specializing in hepatobiliary, gastrointestinal, melanoma, and sarcoma cancers. He serves as Division Chief of Surgical Oncology and Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). Dr. Orr earned his bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Delta State University and his medical degree from UMMC. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, a research fellowship at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and fellowship training in Complex General Surgical Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center.
An accomplished clinician and researcher, Dr. Orr has advanced the field through translational and clinical studies focused on improving outcomes for patients with diverse tumor types. His research includes molecular profiling of racially diverse colorectal cancers and population-based investigations of stem-like tumor subtypes, with the goal of reducing disparities in cancer care. In clinical practice, he integrates advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgical techniques for complex gastrointestinal and hepatopancreatobiliary malignancies, combining technical expertise with a commitment to precision and patient-centered care.
In addition to his clinical and research efforts, Dr. Orr is a dedicated educator and mentor. Since joining the UMMC faculty in 2015, he has taken on key leadership roles, including Associate Director and Division Chief of Surgical Oncology. He has received multiple teaching and advocacy awards from residents and colleagues, reflecting his impact as both a mentor and advocate for trainees. Through his dedication to clinical excellence, research innovation, and education, Dr. Shannon Orr continues to shape surgical oncology practice and advance cancer care in Mississippi.
