Dr. George Weiner, MD, is a nationally recognized medical oncologist specializing in lymphoma and cancer immunology. He serves as Director of the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center and is the C.E. Block Chair of Cancer Research. Dr. Weiner earned his medical degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine, completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Michigan, and his medical oncology fellowship at the National Cancer Institute. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology.
Dr. Weiner’s research explores immune-based mechanisms for cancer therapy, focusing on monoclonal antibodies, cytokine biology, and the tumor microenvironment in lymphoma. He has been a principal investigator in multiple national cooperative group trials and has played a key role in the development of novel immunotherapies for hematologic malignancies. His work integrates basic immunology with clinical trial design to develop new strategies that enhance anti-tumor immune responses.
In addition to his scientific leadership, Dr. Weiner has served in numerous national roles, including as President of the Association of American Cancer Institutes (AACI) and Chair of the NCI’s Clinical Trials and Translational Research Advisory Committee. He is a dedicated mentor to junior investigators and has published extensively in the fields of oncology and immunology. Through his leadership in cancer research, patient care, and advocacy, Dr. George Weiner continues to influence the future of cancer immunotherapy.
