Dr. Edmund Bartlett

Dr. Edmund Bartlett, MD, is a surgical oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center specializing in soft tissue sarcoma, melanoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, and splenic neoplasms. He cares for patients at MSK Bergen and in Manhattan. Dr. Bartlett received dedicated training in sarcoma surgery as the Kristen Ann Carr Sarcoma Fellow at MSK and was awarded the Michael E. Burt Award for clinical excellence in 2018. He is a member of both the Melanoma Disease Management Team and the Sarcoma Disease Management Team at MSK, where multidisciplinary care teams collaborate to determine the best individualized treatment plans for each patient.

Dr. Bartlett's clinical and research focus spans several interrelated areas. In melanoma, he works at the forefront of a rapidly evolving field, incorporating recent advances in sentinel lymph node biopsy, surgical approaches to lymph node disease, immunotherapy, and the integration of surgery, radiation, and immune therapies for higher-risk disease. He collaborates closely with colleagues in medical and radiation oncology to refine treatment sequencing and identify patients who may safely avoid certain procedures. His interest in soft tissue sarcoma reflects the complexity of a disease with approximately 80 subtypes, each requiring a personalized approach. He is actively studying ways to apply the progress made in melanoma to rare cancers including sarcoma and Merkel cell carcinoma, with a particular focus on identifying sarcoma subtypes that may respond effectively to immunotherapy.

Clinical trial development is a central part of Dr. Bartlett's research efforts. His current work focuses on using immunotherapy before cancer spread is detected, including a trial enrolling patients with sarcoma who receive immunotherapy prior to surgery, with the goal of reducing recurrence. These studies are guided by a commitment to expanding treatment options that maximize the chance of cure while minimizing treatment-related complications. Though dedicated to advancing research, Dr. Bartlett describes himself as first and foremost a surgeon, and places optimal patient care at the center of his practice.
